The Sprengisandsleið is a main road in the highlands of Iceland . It is the easternmost and longest of the three road connections through the Icelandic highlands in a north-south direction. It takes its name from the Sprengisandur area it crosses. The street itself is colloquially called Sprengisandur .
It begins in the south east of the Þjórsá , as an extension of the Þjórsárdalsvegur where the Landvegur flows into, and then runs between the reservoirs of the Hrauneyjar power plant. Next, the Fjallabaksleið nyrðri branches off towards Landmannalaugar . After a good 5 km the Veiðivatnaleið continues straight to the Veiðivötn . The road 26 turns north there. The asphalt ends here. For 38 km there is a road to Kvíslavegur. So far that was a combined 65 km as a normal road . Then the highland piste begins for 154 km . After 63 km the Austurleið branches off to the east . After another 14 km, Skagafjarðarleið branches off in a north-westerly direction . This meets the ring road at Varmahlíð . Dragaleið branches off 18 km further north . This is a cross connection to Eyjafjarðarleið , which later meets the ring road at Akureyri . After another 60 km the Sprengisandsleið becomes Bárðardalsvegur vestri . This reaches the ring road at Goðafoss after 37 km.
For the Sprengisandsleið there is a winter closure (Ófært) and a driving ban when the snow melts. The route will only be released again between June 20 and July 10.
