Course of the road
|
The Fjallabaksleið nyrðri is a main road in the highlands in the south of Iceland .
The Skaftártunguvegur branches off between Kirkjubæjarklaustur and Vík í Mýrdal to the north from the ring road and after 16 km merges into Fjallabaksleið nyrðri. The name means Northern Way Behind the Mountains in Icelandic . There is also a Fjallabaksleið syðri ( Southern ... ) . The mountains are the Mýrdalsjökull and the Torfajökull . This path leads to the Eldgjá , the Langisjór lake , Landmannalaugar and the Ljótipollur explosion crater . The first 56 km to Landmannalaugar this way is a highland road with many bodies of water that have to be crossed. The further course to the north is a normal road and from the bridges of the Tungnaá it is even paved. When the bridge of the ring road over the Múlakvísl was destroyed in a glacier run in 2011 , the Fjallabaksleið nyrðri was the only alternative route until a temporary bridge could be built within 100 hours.
As for all Fjallvegir , these roads are closed in winter. The / is divided into three sections, the individual parts of which were released between June 9th and July 17th in recent years.
