Ljótipollur

The Ljótipollur is an explosion crater in the south of Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Rangárþing ytra .

The maar, which is elongated by three eruption points, is located about 15 km northeast of Landmannalaugar and not far from Lake Frostastaðavatn . Like this it belongs to the volcanic system of the Veiðivötn or the Bárðarbunga and originated in the series of eruptions of 1477.

The lake in the crater is made up of groundwater and, like most of the other lakes in the area, is home to trout that can be fished.

A bad slope leads from Fjallabaksleið nyrðri to the crater. To the north and northwest are other lakes, from which the Bláhylur or Hnausapollur can be reached with an access road.

Other Icelandic explosion craters are z. B. the two Víti maars ( Víti in the Askja caldera and Víti on the Krafla) and the Tuffring Hverfjall .
