The Frostastaðavatn is a lake in the highlands of Iceland . It is located in the municipality of Rangárþing ytra .
location
It is located about 5 km north of Landmannalaugar and not far from the Hekla volcano . At the same time it is located in the high pasture area Landmannaafréttur .
Volcanism
The area around the lake is evidence of active volcanism . Two lava fields, the Námshraun , a lava field made of rhyolite with a large lava fall and the Norðurnámshraun extend in the south to or into the lake. They both come from an explosive volcanic eruption in the Veiðivötn system , to which the lake belongs, in 1480. Other lava fields in the vicinity of the lake are Domadalshraun in the west and Frostastaðahraun in the north.
Depending on the weather, the lake impresses with the striking green or blue color of its water.
Highland slopes
Two highland slopes meet on its banks, the Fjallabaksleid nyrðri (F 208) and the Landmannaleið ( Dómadalsleið , F225).
In addition, a difficult road leads from the lake to the Ljótipollur crater , which is part of the Veiðivötn .
Folk tales
Legends , like the name, point to earlier settlement on its banks. The name is derived from isl. staður (place, settlement) and isl. frost = frost, cold, so the German lake of the cold place . There is said to have been a farm called Frostastaðir .
In the folk tale that speaks of the farm, one tells of the consumption of enchanted hairy fish from the lake, which is said to have cost the lives of the residents of the farm that was once there. Another legend tells of a girl who gave a hairy trout to eat to a man who had spurned it. Fish are now being caught again in the lake and sold in Landmannalaugar. As far as is known, there were no hairy ones among them.
