The Goðafoss [ ˈkɔːðaˌfɔsː ] is one of the most famous waterfalls in Iceland .
Location on Skjálfandafljót
It is located in the area of the municipality of Þingeyjarsveit in the north-east of the country near the beginning of the Sprengisandur highland slope within sight of the ring road . Laugar is located east of Goðafoss .
The water of Skjálfandafljót falls over a width of 158 m, which is interrupted by three rocks, about 11 minutes in a wide arc.
The waterfall was placed under nature protection on June 12, 2020 by Icelandic Environment Minister Guðmundur Ingi Guðbrandsson .
Naming
According to legend, the Gode and laws spokesman Þorgeir Ljósvetningagoði Þorkelsson around 1000 n. Chr., After the agreed takeover of Christianity as the state religion, the last pagan gods have thrown in the Goðafoss. Hence the name (= waterfall of the gods). A stained glass window in Akureyri Cathedral ( Akureyrarkirkja ) commemorates this story.
