The Lögsögumaður was the law speaker in old Iceland .

Its job was to recite a third of the laws annually. To do this, he stood on the rock of law ( Lögberg ) in the Allmännerschlucht ( Almannagjá ). Due to the special acoustics in the gorge, it could be heard from afar. He wasn't a judge. However, he led the annual Alþing meeting in Þingvellir . This office was introduced in 930 when the Alþing was founded. The law spokesman was elected for a three-year term.
