The false potto ( Pseudopotto martini ) is a controversial primate species from the Loris family (Lorisidae). It was described in 1996 by the American anthropologist and primatologist Jeffrey H. Schwartz using museum specimens. The validity of the species is controversial and it is unclear whether it is actually a separate species or a variant of the potato . The scientific species name honors the primate researcher Robert Denis Martin (* 1942).
features
False pottos are similar to pottos, but are slightly smaller. Their tail is relatively long, and there are other differences in the structure of the skull and teeth. The snout is relatively wide, the anterior upper premolar is elongated and the posterior molar is receded.
Taxonomy
The species was described in 1996 by Jeffrey H. Schwartz using two specimens that are kept in the anthropological institute of the University of Zurich . One is a female who was caught in Cameroon and later lived in Zurich Zoo . Only the head of the other specimen, a half-grown male, has survived; this animal comes from "Equatorial Africa". Because of this sparse information, no reliable conclusions can be drawn about the distribution area. Nothing is known about the way of life either.
Schwartz's results are controversial. Some researchers, such as E. Sarmiento and S. Bearder, consider the differences to the Potto too small to justify the status of a separate species. Even the IUCN does not recognize the wrong potto as a separate species.
