Eimskip Ehf. Is the oldest and largest Icelandic shipping company . With a fleet of ships for the transport of containers and refrigerated cargo, it operates liner services to Europe, Scandinavia, Canada and the United States. Further business areas are the construction and manning of ships, land transport, stevedoring and storage.
details
The shipping company Eimskipafélag Íslands (German: Isländische Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft) was founded in January 1914. In 1915, the company took over its first two ships. The young shipping company suffered its first loss of ship the following year when the Goðafoss ran aground . In the years of the First World War, Eimskip ceased its liner services between Iceland and Europe as far as possible and instead drove to North America. In 1926, the Brúarfoss, the first reefer ship, was put into service. After the outbreak of World War II, the shipping company replaced its liner services to Europe with those to America. The Eimskip ships Goðafoss and Dettifoss were lost in the war in 1944 and 1945, as were four chartered units.
In the post-war period, the interrupted services in Europe continued and in 1950 the first passenger ship, the Gullfoss, was taken over. The following decades were characterized by a steady expansion of the services, the opening of new branches and the expansion of the onshore facilities. From 1969 Eimskip began exporting aluminum from the Straumsvík aluminum plant to Great Britain. The following year, the company opened a travel agency and began converting its administration to electronic data processing.
In the 1990s, Eimskip expanded the refrigerated cargo area, took over the stevedoring company Tollvörugeymslan and merged the company with the transport company Jes Zimsen to form TVG-Zimsen. In 2003, Eimskip moved its administration, which was built in the old town of Reykjavík in the 1920s, to a new building in Sundahöfn. In the 2000s, Eimskip continued its expansion with the opening of further branches all the way to China and took over the Norwegian shipping company CTG Shipping and the Faroese shipping company Faroe Ship before it was in turn taken over by the Avion Group in 2005. In 2006, Eimskip initially took over the Lithuanian shipping company Kursiu Linija and 65% of the Finnish shipping company Containerships . In addition, further refrigerated cargo businesses were acquired in Europe and the USA in 2006 and 2007. A restructuring of the company began in 2008, in the course of which numerous business areas that were not directly related to the transport business were sold - as well as the majority stake in Containerships. After the restructuring was completed, Eimskip was taken over by foreign investors The Yucaipa Companies and Landsbanki in 2009 .
Today the shipping group is organized under the umbrella company Hf. Eimskipafélag Íslands and has the following subsidiaries:
- Eimskip Norway , formerly Eimskip-CTG , was incorporated in Norway in 2005 and mainly operates refrigerated shipping.
- Faroe Ship , formerly Skipafelagið Føroyar , on the Faroe Islands was incorporated in 2004 and operates the Faroe Islands services.
- Eimskip Flytjandi handles land transport and postal services in Iceland.
- TVG-Zimsen was incorporated in 1996 and operates logistics services.
- Herjólfur ferry service between Landeyjahöfn and the Westman Islands . (until the end of March 2019)
