The Herjólfur III is an Icelandic car ferry built in 1992 as Herjólfur , which was used between the Icelandic south coast and Heimaey on the Vestmannaeyjar (Westman Islands). She was replaced by a new ship in summer 2019 .

history

The Herjólfur in Landeyjahöfn

The ship was built in 1991/1992 with the hull number 77 at the shipyard Simek, Sigbjørn Iversen A / S in the Norwegian Flekkefjord and was the third ferry in a row to bear the name Herjólfur . Since its delivery in 1992, it has operated between the port of Þorlákshöfn and Heimaey with a journey time of around 2 hours and 45 minutes. Since the new port of Landeyjahöfn was opened in July 2010 , the travel time between the Icelandic coast and Heimaey has only been 30 minutes in good weather.

The number of passengers has increased due to the faster connection. Initially, however, there were still difficulties with the port of Landeyjahöfn, which turned out to be too shallow for a ferry the size of the Herjólfur , and in 2011 the ferry had to be replaced for some time by the smaller Baldur ferry , which previously operated in Breiðafjörður , while the Herjólfur in Danish Odense was subjected to overhaul.

At the end of March 2019 it was announced that the municipality of Vestmannaeyjar is taking over Herjólfur and its ferry connections from Sæferðir ehf., A subsidiary of Eimskip ehf.

In June 2019, after various delays, a new ferry of the same name was delivered, which replaced the Herjólfur . In this context, the ship was renamed Herjólfur III . The Herjólfur III is / f as of April 2020 in the possession of Herjólfur H, served in November 2019 on the occasion of a failure of the new Herjólfur as a replacement ship, and has undergone some revision work in February 2020 a shipyard stay.
