The Hamburger Liedertafel is the oldest male choir in Hamburg . It was founded in 1823 by the composer and music teacher Albert Methfessel . After the Patriotic Society of 1765 and the Hamburg Gymnastics Association from 1816 , it is the third oldest Hamburg Association still in existence. Together with members of the Hamburg Gymnastics Association, the choir sang the Deutschlandlied in public for the first time in 1841 .
