Hamete

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hamete ( Japanese ハ メ 手 ) is a Japanese technical term used in the game of Go .

It is a kind of local opening trap , a trick move that, unlike the Tesuji, is incorrect. Mostly it is a deviation from the usual standard way of playing (joseki), on which the obvious beginner development gives the Hametes player an advantage that he is not entitled to. Knowledge of the protection against Hamete is part of the Joseki studies and distinguishes the study from simply memorizing the standard.
