Hamlethaus (Lutherstadt Wittenberg)

The Hamlet House

The Hamlethaus is a listed building in Lutherstadt Wittenberg , Collegienstraße 12.

In 1504 the building, now known as Hamlethaus, was mentioned as "borsen", in 1507 it was called " Burse des Merkur" (Bursa Mercurii) and there were legal lectures for the Wittenberg students. Later the house was converted into a bathing room . According to tradition , William Shakespeare's heroine " Hamlet " is said to have studied in Wittenberg and lived in this house. The original house was demolished in 1904 and replaced by a new building that took up the characteristic gable design of the original.

Since Hamlet lived around 1200, but the Wittenberg University of Leucorea was not founded until 1502, the situation seems questionable. It is possible that the name Hamlet is an allusion to the Danish Prince Christian II , who has similarities with the figure of Hamlet. However, this lived in the house of Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. However, it cannot be ruled out that he was occasionally in this house. Just as it cannot be ruled out that Shakespeare incorporated hidden elements of the Danish house into the Hamlet story. For example, the Wittenberg reformer , Johannes Bugenhagen, was called to Denmark to introduce the Reformation there . This literary gesture may only be a reference to the high status that Wittenberg University still held in Europe in the early 17th century, when Shakespeare wrote his Hamlet.
