Hanö is a 2.14 square kilometer Baltic Sea island in the Swedish Hanö Bay named after it, off the southwest of the historic Blekinge province and the Listerlandet peninsula . The island is 2.2 km long from north ( Bönsäcken ) to south ( Äspudden ), and 1.3 km wide. Hanö Sound, which separates the island from the mainland, is 3.6 km wide at its narrowest point. 33 people live in the only village of the same name, Hanö, on the west side of the island (as of December 31, 2008). Eight years earlier it was 39.

The car-free island can be reached via Sölvesborg from the fishing port of Nogersund, five kilometers away, in 25 minutes with the M / S Vitaskär or with your own boat. On the island, which is up to 60 meters high, there is a Vandrarhem and at the highest point the lighthouse Hanö fyr . This place is called fyrplatsen (fire place) after the lighthouse . Half of the island is forested, a large part of which is hornbeam . The entire island is a Natura 2000 area. There is a wild herd of fallow deer . The wind speeds on Hanö are remarkable, on December 3, 1999 43 m / s were measured, a Swedish record outside the fells. A small museum by the harbor provides information about the island's nature, history, fishing and culture.

The island belongs to the municipality of Sölvesborg .

history

In 1759 Elsa Greta Schult bought Hanö from the crown. The island is still privately owned today.

During the Napoleonic Wars and the Continental Blockade, Hanö was the base of the English fleet in the Swedish-English War from 1810 to 1812. Among other was James Saumarez, 1st Baron de Saumarez here with the famous HMS Victory stationed briefly. A “Seamans Graveyard” for 15 British seamen buried here commemorates the events. A delegation from the Royal Navy erected a large wooden cross in 1972.

A school was set up in 1886 and is now the youth hostel.

The first beacon shone in 1869, the lighthouse built between 1904 and 1906, 16 meters high, was automated in the 1990s. The beacon is said to have the greatest range in the Baltic Sea at 23 nm .
