Emperor Shang of Han ( traditionally漢殤帝, Pinyin Hàn Shāng Dì , W.-G. Han Shang-ti ; * autumn 105 ; † August or September 106 ) was the fifth emperor of the Eastern Han dynasty .

Empress mother Deng Sui put him on the throne even though he was barely 100 days old and had an older brother, Liu Sheng (劉勝). The empress mother also kept the twelve-year-old Liu Hu (劉祜) in Luoyang , who ascended the throne as Emperor An after the early death of the young emperor Shang . Empress mother Deng Sui also served as regent for him.

Family background and accession to the throne

The then Prince Liu Long was born in autumn 105 to Emperor He and an unknown concubine . Because Emperor He had always lost his sons to illnesses during his reign, he had his sons Liu Sheng and Liu Long raised outside the palace by foster parents.

When Emperor He 106 died, his widow Deng Sui called the princes back to the capital. Prince Sheng was the elder, but in poor health. Therefore Deng Sui appointed the infant Liu Long to the crown prince and that same night to the emperor (Emperor Shang). Empress Deng Sui became the mother of the empress .

Domination

After Liu Long became emperor, his brother Sheng was made Prince of Pingyuan . Fearing that Emperor Shang would also die soon, the Empress Mother called his twelve-year-old cousin Liu Hu to the court in Luoyang , which was considered by many to be the legitimate heir to the Han throne.

Because Emperor Shang was an infant, the real power was in the hands of Deng Sui. Her brother Deng Zhi (鄧騭) became the most powerful official in the government. She announced a general amnesty to relieve the Dou family.

Emperor Shang died in the year of his accession to the throne. The officials wanted to raise Liu Sheng to emperor, but the empress mother feared that he harbored grudges against her for ignoring him first. She therefore declared Liu Hu to be emperor (Emperor An).

Because Emperor Shang died so young, he was buried in his father's tomb complex to save costs.
