Liu is a Chinese family name . The transcription Liu can be done with different Chinese characters , the family name 劉 ; (刘 in abbreviated form ) ( Lau in Cantonese ), 柳 , 留 and 六 . In Vietnamese , the name can be represented either as "Liễu" (in the north) or as "Lưu" (in the south).

In Cantonese transcription, Liu is still another name: 廖 .

劉 is an extremely common name that has existed since the Han Dynasty - a high point in Chinese history.
