Simu Liu
Simu Liu ( Chinese 刘思慕 ; born April 19, 1989 in Harbin , Heilongjiang Province ) is a Chinese - Canadian actor and stunt performer . After appearances in various American and Canadian television series, he is to take over the role of superhero Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe from 2021 .
life and career
Simu Liu was born in the north-eastern Chinese metropolis of Harbin. There he grew up with his grandparents, as his parents worked at Queen's University in Kingston . He first met his parents at the age of five when his father took him from China to Canada, where he grew up in Mississauga , Ontario Province . He attended the University of Toronto Schools as a secondary school. After graduating from school, he began studying accounting at the University of Western Ontario . After completing the four-year course, he worked for a while in the profession, including for the service company Deloitte . Soon he decided on other career options and found an interest in acting.
He had his first role in front of the camera in 2012 with a guest appearance on the series Nikita . Through an ad on Craigslist , he got an extra role in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim in 2013, which was being filmed at Pinewood Toronto Studios at the time . Further guest roles followed in Canadian and US series, including Warehouse 13 , Played , Out With Dad , Mayday - Alarm im Cockpit and Beauty and the Beast .
In 2015 he was cast as Paul Xie in the first of two seasons of the Canadian crime series Blood and Water . For his acting performance, he received an ACTRA Award in 2017 and was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award . Since 2016, Liu can be seen in the sitcom Kim's Convenience as Jung Kim in a leading role, which is based on the Canadian play of the same name about a Korean-Canadian general store in Toronto. In 2017 he was cast in the first season of the series Taken - Time is your enemy in the role of ex- CIA analyst Faaron . Liu's other guest appearances include Orphan Black , Dark Matter , Bad Blood , The Expanse , Yappie and Fresh Off the Boat .
It was announced at San Diego Comic-Con 2019 that Liu would take on the role of superhero Shang-Chi in the Marvel Cinematic Universe . The release of the solo film under the title Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is planned for February 2021 and is part of the fourth phase of the film universe.
In addition to acting, Liu also occasionally works as a stuntman. As a trained martial artist, he had engagements in this activity for the series Heroes Reborn and Designated Survivor, as well as in some Canadian films.
