Laura Di Toma

Laura Di Toma (born September 5, 1954 ) is a former Italian judoka . She was vice world champion in 1980 and European champion in 1976, 1980 and 1983.

Athletic career

Laura Di Toma took second place behind Laura Tomaseti in the 1973 Italian championships, which were held in five weight classes , in the weight class up to 60 kilograms . The following year, the Italian championships were held in seven weight classes, Laura Di Toma won the middleweight division, the weight class up to 66 kilograms. Fourteen days after the 1974 championships, unofficial European championships were held in Genoa, Laura Di Toma won the middleweight division ahead of Frenchwoman Paulette Fouillet . In 1975 the first official European championships took place in Munich . Laura Di Toma won a bronze medal in both middleweight and open class. The following year, at the European Championships in 1976 in Vienna, Laura Di Toma won a bronze medal in the middleweight division. In the open class she won the title against Carina Thomas from the Netherlands . 1977 Laura Di Toma won the Italian Middleweight Championships.

After a year break, Laura Di Toma returned in 1979 in the light middleweight division, the weight class up to 61 kilograms. At the European Championships in 1979 in Kerkrade, she received a bronze medal in her new weight class. In 1980 she won the title at the Italian championships in early March. A fortnight later she won the European Championships in Udine, where she defeated the French Brigitte Deydier in the final . At the end of November 1980, the first World Championships for women took place in New York City . Laura Di Toma defeated Herta Reiter from Austria in the quarter-finals and Martine Rottier from France in the semifinals . In the final she was defeated by the Dutch Anita Staps . At the end of March 1981, the 1981 European Championships took place in Madrid . Laura Di Toma reached the final, but lost to the British Ann Hughes . In 1982 she won the Italian championships and the international tournament in Leonding. At the 1983 European Championships in Genoa Laura Di Toma competed in the middleweight division and won the title by beating Dawn Netherwood from the United Kingdom in the final . In the same year she was also Italian middleweight champion, but then returned to the light middleweight division. At the European Championships in 1984 in Pirmasens, she won a bronze medal in the light middleweight division. At the 1984 World Championships in Vienna, she retired in the open class after defeats against the Belgian Ingrid Berghmans and the Australian Yvonne Zuydam . In the light middleweight division she defeated the German Petra Wahnsiedler in the quarterfinals . In the semifinals she was defeated by the future world champion Natasha Hernández from Venezuela, she lost the battle for bronze to Martine Rottier and reached fifth place. In 1985 she finished seventh at the European Championships . In 1986 at the World Championships in Maastricht, she reached the semi-finals with a quarter-final victory over the Spanish Begoña Gómez . After defeats to the British Diane Bell and the Japanese Ryōko Fujimoto , Laura Di Toma finished fifth again. In 1987 and 1988 she was third in the Italian championships.
