Joanne Liu

Joanne Liu ( Chinese  廖 滿 嫦 , Pinyin Liào Mǎncháng ; born April 11, 1965 in Montreal ) is a Canadian pediatrician. Since 2013 she has been president of the international organization for medical emergency aid Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF; German Doctors Without Borders ).

Life

Liu grew up in Francophone Québec , where her parents, Chinese immigrants, ran a restaurant. She studied medicine at McGill University in Montreal and the School of Medicine at New York University , specializing in pediatrics in 1996 . From 2000 to 2013 she worked in emergency medicine at the Center hospitalier universitaire Sainte-Justine in Montreal. She is a professor at the Université de Montréal and also teaches at the Fudan University in Shanghai .

Since 1996, Liu has been involved as a doctor in missions for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in various crisis areas, and between 1999 and 2002 she was program manager in the Paris office of Doctors Without Borders. She was President of the Canadian section of Doctors Without Borders from 2004 to 2009 and promoted the development of a telemedicine project for the interests of MSF.

In June 2013 she was elected President of MSF and has headed its international coordination office in Geneva since October 1, 2013 .

In 2013, Liu received the Royal College Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award.
