Joanne Jishung "JJ" Liu (born April 10, 1965 in Taipei ) is a professional Taiwanese poker player .

Personal

Liu grew up with three brothers and a sister in Taiwan and gained her first experiences with Chinese gambling in her childhood . After graduating from Ming Chuan University , she moved to Peoria , Illinois . There she earned a master's degree in computer science from Bradley University . Liu then worked for a few years as a software developer for the space company Space Systems / Loral in Palo Alto, California .

Poker career

Liu came into contact with poker during her time as a software developer and initially played the variant of Limit Hold'em . Since 1996 she has been taking part in renowned live tournaments.

In early May 1996 , Liu was successful for the first time at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) at Binion's Horseshoe in Las Vegas and reached the final table in a tournament in Limit Hold'em , which she finished in fourth place, worth more than 30,000 US dollars . In January 1997 she won the Poker Classic at the Four Queens Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and secured a prize of over $ 40,000. At the 2002 WSOP , Liu was again at a final table and finished fifth in No Limit Hold'em for just under $ 35,000. In mid-May 2003 she finished second in the Ladies Championship of the 2003 WSOP . At the end of March 2005, Liu won the World Poker Challenge in Reno and received a prize of around 90,000 dollars. At the main event of the World Poker Tour (WPT), the Five Diamond World Poker Classic in mid-December 2005 at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, she finished fourth and secured prize money of more than $ 360,000. At the end of August 2006 she won the WPT Ladies Night Out in Los Angeles and, in addition to the title, received a seat at the final WPT event of the season. In March 2007, Liu made the jump to the final table of the WPT Main Event and finished second after losing heads-up to Ted Forrest , who was paid with her highest prize money of $ 600,000. At the end of November 2008 she won the Deep Stack Extravaganza at the Venetian Resort Hotel in Las Vegas and received the grand prize of just under $ 170,000. At the WPT Main Event in Biloxi in January 2010, Liu finished eighth for just under $ 50,000. In the meantime the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino played out WSOP 2010 she won the prize worth more than 85 thousand US dollars in third place in a tournament in Pot Limit Hold'em . At the end of May 2014, Liu won the high roller of the Asia Pacific Poker Tour in Macau and secured a prize money equivalent to more than 180,000 US dollars. She also won the Goliath Million in early June 2016 at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas and received more than $ 100,000 for it.

In total, Liu has made more than three million dollars playing poker in live tournaments. This makes her the second most successful of all Taiwanese poker players after James Chen and the tenth most successful women by tournament prize money .
