history

The cathedral in the historic center of the city of Victoria de Durango is opposite the Plaza de Armas and had two previous buildings. The first parish church was consecrated to the Assumption of Mary and was elevated to a cathedral by Pope Paul V in 1623 after the establishment of the Diocese of Durango . After it was destroyed by fire, construction began on the second cathedral in 1635, which was affected by excessive humidity and had to be demolished. The current cathedral was built by the architect Mateo Nuñez from 1695. The exterior construction was completed in 1713. The completion of the interior and the altars took until 1844, when the cathedral was also consecrated. Pope Pius XII 1957 also awarded her the title of minor basilica. In 1990 Pope John Paul II visited the cathedral basilica.

architecture

The entrance facade faces south. It consists of a decorated portal area and the massive side towers. The two-story portal area with a door is lavishly designed in the Baroque style. The square bell towers consist of five floors. The side entrances to the transept are designed in the Churrigueresque style.

The five-aisled church in the sober baroque style consists of the main aisles and two side aisles from two rows with five side chapels each . The three inner naves form a hall church that is illuminated above the side chapel like a basilica . Above the main altar, the large dome rises over an octagonal drum . Square columns with Corinthian capitals support the four yokes of the nave , the dome and the two yokes of the choir of the main nave and, correspondingly, the aisles.

Furnishing

The interior decoration of the ceiling and dome with neo-Byzantine motifs was created at the beginning of the 20th century. The main altar in classical style shows the marble statue of the Immaculate Conception under a canopy of Filipino origin. In the right-angled apse are the choir stalls made of mahogany wood, it dates from the 18th century and has 25 high chairs and 18 lower chairs. The side chapels are decorated with altars and large paintings. The church has a gallery organ in the entrance area and a smaller one in the right aisle next to the choir.
