Liu Chao-shiuan ( Chinese  劉兆玄 , Pinyin Liú Zhàoxuán ; born May 10, 1943 in Liuyang , Hunan ) is a Kuomintang politician and was Prime Minister of the Republic of China (Taiwan) from May 20, 2008 to September 10, 2009 .

Life

Liu graduated from Taiwan National University and received a PhD in chemistry from the University of Toronto in 1971 . On his return to Taiwan, Liu worked at Tsing Hua National University and in 1979, when he switched to the government's science committee, he embarked on a political career.

From 1987 to 1993, Liu was director of Tsing Hua National University and was appointed minister of transport in 1993. Former President Ma Ying-jeou became Minister of Justice at the same time, and the two have enjoyed a good friendship ever since, and both politicians' parents came from Hunan .

Under Vincent Siew as prime minister, Liu became vice president of the Executive Yuan in 1997 , but resigned after the Kuomintang was defeated in the 2000 presidential election. In 2004, Liu became the rector of Soochow University .

After the Kuomintang's victory in the legislative yuan and presidential elections in 2008 , he became Prime Minister of the Republic of China on May 20, 2008 on the proposal of the new President Ma Ying-jeou . On September 10, 2009, he resigned with his entire cabinet. Successor as Prime Minister was the General Secretary of the Kuomintang, Wu Den-yih .
