Vincent Siew

Vincent C. Siew ( Chinese  蕭萬長  /  萧万长 , Pinyin Xiāo Wàncháng , W.-G. Hsiao Wan-chang ; born January 3, 1939 in Chiayi ) is a politician of the Kuomintang in the Republic of China in Taiwan . He was Vice President of the Republic of China from 2008 to 2012.

biography

Born in Chiayi, Siew graduated in 1961 from the "Institute for Diplomacy" of the Chengchi National University and received his master's degree in 1965 at the "Graduate Institute of International Law and Diplomacy".

From 1966 to 1972 he worked at the Consulate of the Republic of China in Kuala Lumpur , and in 1988 he was appointed to the Central Committee of the Kuomintang. Three years later he became Minister of Economic Affairs and held this office until 1993. He represented the then President Lee Teng-hui in 1993 and 1994 in the APEC . In 1996 he was elected to the Legislative Yuan , from 1997 to 2000 he was Prime Minister. He was the first Taiwan-born Prime Minister of the Republic of China.

From 2000 to 2005 Siew was deputy chairman of the Kuomintang, on May 20, 2008 he became vice president under President Ma Ying-Jeou, who was elected in the 2008 presidential election .

Siew is married to Susan Chu ( 朱 俶 賢 , Zhū ​​Shúxián ) and has three daughters with her: Rú-tíng ( 蕭如婷 ), Rú-fēn ( 蕭如芬 ) and Zhì-yòu ( 蕭至佑 ).

Siew's permanent smile has earned him the nickname "Smiling Siew" ( 微笑 老 蕭  /  微笑 老 萧 , Wēixiào Lǎo Xiāo , English Smiling Siew ).
