Liu Yang ( Chinese  刘洋 , Pinyin Liú Yáng ; born October 6, 1978 in Zhengzhou , Henan Province , People's Republic of China ) is a Chinese fighter pilot and a member of the Space Corps of the People's Liberation Army . In 2012, she was the first Chinese space traveler on board Shenzhou 9 .

Youth and service in the Air Force

Liu Yang's family comes from the village Zexia (泽下村) in the large village Wulong (五龙镇) the independent city Linzhou in the province of Henan . The spaceman herself was born and raised in the provincial capital of Zhengzhou . Her father worked as an engineer in a mechanical engineering company, the mother worked in a small car factory. After Liu Yang attended elementary school in the Islamic district of Guancheng (郑州市管城 回族 区 实验 小学) from 1985–1991 - Liu Yang himself is Han Chinese - and from 1991–1994 the lower school of the 3rd grammar school in Zhengzhou (郑州 市 第三中学), she attended the science section of the 11th grammar school in Jinshui District from 1994 . In 1997, shortly before graduating from high school, recruiters from the Air Force of the People's Republic of China visited their school to arouse interest in a career as a pilot, especially among the female students. Since Liu Yang achieved the full number of 100 points in algebra, chemistry and biology and was 31 points above the numerus clausus , she had no problem at the Chinese Air Force pilot's academy in Changchun (中国人民解放军 空军 长春 飞行学院) to be included. On August 1, 1997, she joined the People's Liberation Army , she was a member of the 7th class of Chinese fighter pilots.

After completing her training, in June 2001 she was assigned to an air transport squadron stationed in Wuhan in what was then the Guangzhou Military District . There she first flew an Antonov An-26 transport aircraft , then she became a jet pilot in a tactical air force squadron (the Chinese equivalent of the German alarm groups ). During a nightly instrument flight exercise on September 10, 2003, shortly after take-off, she got caught in a flock of pigeons 10 m above the ground, which caused two rotor blades in the right engine of her aircraft to break off and the air intake duct to be 3/4 blocked by numerous dead birds. Nonetheless, she was able to land the plane safely 11 minutes later. However, she completed 1680 flight hours without an accident - Liu Yang is certified for seven types of aircraft - for which she was awarded the level II military aircraft pilot . She eventually rose to the position of deputy corps commander with the rank of major in her unit.

Service in the space corps

On May 7, 2010, after a multi-stage selection process, Liu Yang was accepted into the spacecraft corps of the People's Liberation Army with the second year , where she completed a two-year training program. As a rule, the astronaut training with the People's Liberation Army takes four years. A particularly demanding part of this training is the exercises with the Feitian spacesuit in a water basin. However, since the Shenzhou 9 mission was not scheduled to go into space, Liu Yang was selected for this mission in March 2012, even though she had not yet completed her training. It took off from the Jiuquan space station on June 16, 2012, exactly 49 years to the day after the launch of Valentina Tereschkowa , the first woman in space . On June 18, the team - in addition to Liu Yang, Liu Wang (unrelated) and Jing Haipeng , for whom this was already the second space flight - entered the Tiangong 1 space laboratory, which was launched on September 29, 2011, after an automatic docking maneuver and put it into operation . On June 24, 2012, the spacemen briefly returned to their spaceship, disconnected, and Liu Wang reconnected by hand control. This was the first manual docking maneuver in the history of Chinese space travel. Liu Wang carried out experiments in the field of space medicine during the total of nine days in the space laboratory .

Liu Yang has been married to Zhang Hua (张华, * 1972) since 2004, who at the time was political commissioner at her air force unit in Wuhan. She lives, like all members of the astronaut corps in Space City in Beijing Municipality Haidian . Her grandfather Liu Yicheng (刘义成) had already been a communist; he had joined the local militia unit at 16 and made it into a squad leader at 18 with the task of procuring rifles and ammunition for the 8th March Army . In May 2001, Liu Yang joined the Chinese Communist Party himself . In March 2016, Liu Wang was promoted to lieutenant colonel and in March 2018 to colonel. Since November 1, 2018, she has been a vice chairman of the All-China Women's Association .
