Liu Qizhen gained his first international experience at the 2017 Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar , where he finished fifth with 80.12 m. In the following year he took part in the Asian Games in Jakarta for the first time and won the silver medal behind the Indian Neeraj Chopra with a width of 82.22 m . In 2019 he reached fifth place with 80.19 m at the Asian Championships in Doha . He also took part in the World Championships there in October , but was eliminated from the qualification with 75.81 m .
From 2017 to 2019, Liu became the Chinese javelin throwing champion.
