In 1987 she studied painting again at the University of Applied Arts Vienna - until 1989 in the master class for design theory and experimental design with Maria Lassnig , then in the master class of Arik Brauer , from which she graduated in 1993. She has lived in Vienna as a freelance artist since 1994.

The Chinese-Austrian artist combines Western and Asian traditions in her paintings. In her work, Liu Xiuming repeatedly deals with traditional Chinese motifs such as the fish, which stands for abundance, wealth, prosperity, perseverance and tenacity. The recurring column is a symbol of power (columns of triumph) but can also be understood as a connection between heaven and earth and thus as a means of pointing out human striving. By breaking into space, the column becomes an impressive sign of hope.

It is well known that depictions of clouds and skies developed a rich tradition in art and especially in painting in the 19th century. In China, clouds are symbolic of happiness and peace as well as the West. Clouds as backgrounds can also be found in Fang Lijun and Liu Ye , as well as the color design in dominant red and blue.

It is an emotional world whose appearance is contrary to the real world. Liu Xiuming's works convey a search for peace, security and harmony. Liu Xiuming could well be described as a romantic. Your landscapes appear independent of time and space. The play of light and shadow without a clear origin, the mystical, dreamlike atmosphere, the suggestive colored surfaces create a meditation space, a space of emptiness. Her works are particularly close to romanticism in the expression of the feeling of loneliness and the human being at the mercy. However, Liu Xiuming's works have nothing to do with the revival of contemporary romantic images.
