Sam Liu is an American producer , director , storyboard artist, and character designer. He is known for directing superhero animated films for Marvel Cinematic Universe and Warner Bros. Animation .

Career

After attending the University of California at Santa Cruz for fine arts and studying at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Liu got his first job drawing comics for Image Comics . In 1996 he switched to animation , directing Roughnecks: Starship Troopers , Chronicles and Godzilla: The Series for Sony Animation . He later went to Sony Computer Entertainment of America to design characters for Sony's PlayStation . He then returned to animation and won a 2006 Daytime Emmy Award for his work on the Batman series .

Film career

After receiving the Daytime Emmy, Liu worked on a variety of animated films for Marvel Entertainment and Warner Bros. Animation, including All-Star Superman, Superman / Batman: Public Enemies , Hulk vs. Planet Hulk , Thor: Son of Asgard and co-directed with Lauren Montgomery Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and Batman: Year One .

Liu was also the main character designer for Superman / Batman : Apocalypse. Liu returned to television in 2010, directing Green Lantern: The Animated Series with Bruce Timm and Beware the Batman with Glen Murakami . He then made the animated film Justice League: Gods and Monsters, the companion series Justice League: Gods and Monsters Chronicles by Bruce Timm, the animated film Justice League vs. Teen Titans, the animated adaptation of Batman: The Killing Joke, and more.

Together with James Tucker , Liu co-directed the animated adaptation of Superman's Death in the first episode. Liu then shot the sequel to the animated adaptation Reign of the Supermen and the animated film Justice League vs. the Fatal Five. His current film is Superman: Red Son.

On the film review page Rotten Tomatoes , his films were mostly viewed positively by the critics.

Most of the critics could here the films Justice League vs. Fatal Five (100%), Superman Red Son (93%) and The Death of Superman (93%) are convincing. Very few critics were able to convince the films Batman: The Killing Joke (40%) and Batman and Harley Quinn (45%).
