Peter Liu Guandong

Peter Liu Guandong (born June 19, 1919 in Qingyuan, Hebei Province, † October 28, 2013 ) was a Roman Catholic bishop and Apostolic Prefect of Yixian in the Chinese province of Hebei.

Life

Peter Liu Guandong entered the seminary in 1935 and was ordained a priest on June 29, 1945. Because of his engagement against the regime-affiliated " Chinese Catholic Patriotic Association " he was imprisoned and spent the first time in 1955 and from 1958 to 1981 in Chinese prisons and labor camps.

After his 23 years of internment and release, he was committed to building up the Catholic Church in China, despite the ban. On July 25, 1982, he was secretly ordained coadjutor bishop of the Apostolic Prefecture of Yixian by Francesco Saverio Zhou Shanfu.

In 1986, Peter Liu Guandong was appointed bishop of the Roman Catholic Apostolic Prefecture based in Yi County . In 1995 Cosmas Shi Enxiang became his successor.

In 1989 he was arrested after a meeting of Catholic Chinese bishops with a promise of allegiance to the Roman Pope and spent from 1989 to 1992 in a re-education camp. After suffering a stroke in 1993 and paralysis that restricted his speech and movement, he was further placed under house arrest. In 1997 he managed to escape underground. He died in office at the age of 94 of various health problems.
