Hand grinder (stone processing)

A hand grinder for stone processing is an electric or compressed air powered hand machine with a mostly rotating round grinding wheel .

Machines with rectangular grinding surfaces are used less frequently.

In principle, the hand grinder is an angle grinder with a low speed (slow runner). The maximum speed is often 5000 revolutions per minute and is often adjustable so that different grinding tools can be used. Grinding machines with adjustable water supply are used especially for stone processing. The water serves as a coolant for the grinding tool and the workpiece as well as binding and transporting away grinding dust .

Tools

Different tools are used as required:

• Diamond grinding discs for grinding and straightening surfaces of concrete , screed or natural stone .
• Grinding discs for working metal and stone (e.g. cleaning weld seams / breaking edges).
• Flap discs for smooth grinding of surfaces to a low surface roughness ,
• Rubber sanding plate z. B. for rough derusting of metal or removing thick layers of paint, but also for grinding and polishing surfaces.
• Brush pot z. B. for derusting or especially for brushing rough natural stone surfaces,
• Polishing plates for polishing painted surfaces using pastes.

Occupational safety

When working with hand grinders, as with all grinding processes, abrasion occurs in the form of dust. If it is not bound or sucked off by the addition of water, it is essential to wear a dust mask .

Furthermore, you should always wear protective goggles , flame-retardant cotton clothing and, due to the high noise level, hearing protection when working with hand grinding machines.

The wearing of gloves should be avoided in any case, as gloves can get caught in rotating parts and cause serious injuries, including tearing off limbs.

Electric hand grinders with water supply must with a separating transformer be operated between device connection and outlet.
