Cell phone library

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The mobile phone library is a website that offers German and English texts for free download and reading on the mobile phone display. It is a project by QiOO Interactive - Mobile Media & More from Berlin, a company that develops and sells mobile games. The cell phone library is operated as a leisure project and provides a platform for cell phone novels .

development

The idea for the mobile phone library came about in 2003 during a project by students from the UdK Berlin and the Institute of Electronic Business, which originally planned to make books available on WAP sites in cooperation with Berlin libraries .

In order to make reading longer texts on the mobile phone display more comfortable, a decision was made at the end of 2003 to develop a Java application that made it possible to scroll through the pages. The first cell phone books were created on this basis. The cell phone library has been online since the end of 2006 (around October / November).

Content

First and foremost, these are works in the public domain, some of which are refinanced through advertisements. The mobile phone library mainly offers classic literature and classic fantastic literature, mostly short stories or novels. The mobile phone library does not offer any search functions for researching or in the mobile phone books, so far the contents are available as a list. Some of the titles are offered in cooperation with DigBib.org (German) and Project Gutenberg (English). Publishers have the option of making their titles available via the mobile phone library. It is also possible to convert your own texts into a mobile phone book using the QiC application developed by QiOO, provided that the texts to be converted are available as plain text (.txt or ASCII ).

target group

The offer is aimed at both literary and technically savvy users. The lack of instructions or help texts and the mostly very technically colored texts make access difficult for less experienced people.

Technical functions

The mobile phone library offers two download options. On the one hand, the cell phone books can be loaded directly onto the cell phone via a WAP page, whereby the usual GPRS / UMTS costs arise. Alternatively, the installation files ( JAR / JAD files ) can be downloaded to your own computer, from where they can be transferred to the phone via data cable, infrared, Bluetooth or, in some cases, a memory card. There are no costs for this version. The installation works in a similar way to JAVA games, as can be downloaded for mobile phones.

With the help of the QPS technology ( Quark Publishing System ) used, an exact line break can be carried out so that long words that no longer fit on a line can be separated. This makes it possible to leaf through longer texts quickly. You can either scroll back and forth individually (cursor down or up) or in "fast forward" (keep the * or # keys pressed).

You can set a bookmark in a mobile phone book by using the menu item "Bookmarks" to save the page you are currently viewing and then call it up again later. The bookmark remains saved until it is overwritten by a new bookmark.

The typeface can be adjusted via the options regarding the font size and type, whereby a restart of the mobile phone book is necessary after each change, since the book pages have to be set again (line breaks etc.).
