Hans Ebner (engineer)

Hans Ebner (born June 21, 1900 in Breslau ; † April 24, 1977 in Aachen ) was a German civil engineer.

Life

Ebner studied civil engineering at the TH Aachen from 1919 to 1924 with Erich Trefftz and Theodore von Kármán, among others . He worked in the engineering office J. Pirlet and from 1924 in aircraft construction (Luftfahrtgesellschaft Stralsund, Rohrbach Metallflugzeugbau). Ebner then went back to an engineering office for civil engineering (from Gerhard Mensch in Berlin ) before he joined the German Aviation Research Institute (DVL) in Berlin-Adlershof as a research assistant in 1927 , where he stayed until 1937.

Ebner was department head for strength and head of the Institute for Sea Aviation and dealt with the statics of airplanes and airships. In 1929 he received his doctorate at the TH Berlin-Charlottenburg on three-dimensional trusses for airplanes (for the calculation of spatial trusses in aircraft construction: wickerwork with redundant rectangular transverse walls ). In 1937/38 he developed the shear field theory with Hermann Köller, which anticipated the essential ideas of the later finite element method in structural engineering.

From 1946 to 1953 Ebner was a self-employed engineer, where he dealt in particular with measurement technology on buildings and developed and built measuring devices. from 1955 until his retirement in 1968 he was full professor for lightweight construction at RWTH Aachen University and founder of the Institute for lightweight construction at RWTH Aachen University.

Ebner was a corresponding member of the German Academy of Aviation Research and an Associate Fellow of the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences in New York. He received the prize from the Lilienthal Society for Aviation Research for investigating the shell strength.
