Hans Gruler (born January 7, 1955 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German-American Taekwondo grandmaster.

Life

In 1971, at the age of 16, at the request of his father, Gruler began his Taekwondo training in the Armare Sportverein eV Frankfurt am Main. Under the direction of Master Armando Chavero , who himself trained by Grand Master Kwon Jae Hwa and became Vice World Champion at the 1st WTF Taekwondo World Championships in Korea , Gruler quickly learned the techniques of Korean martial arts. His talent for martial arts was quickly recognized by Master Chavero and Gruler became his master student.

Taekwondo became a passion for Gruler and so he was able to pass the 1st KUP exam in 1976.

In 1977 he left his trainer and mentor and founded his own association Taekyon eV in Frankfurt am Main.

With the help of the city of Frankfurt am Main, Gruler was assigned the gym of the Wöhlerschule am Dornbusch and was able to put his ideas about martial arts into practice. The association grew rapidly and had around 150 members within a year. Many of his students came from the Taekwondo clubs of the city of Gelnhausen. Due to the proximity of the Taekyon Association to the American barracks in Wiesbaden, more and more GIs became aware of Gruler's training methods.

In 1978 Gruler passed the 1st DAN exam in the ITF Taekwondo Association.

Gruler's combat training was intensified and he was also preparing for upcoming championships.

After his official training at his school, Gruler drove twice a week to his master colleague Karl Wohlfahrt and prepared with a team for championships.

Due to the influence of his American students, Gruler expanded his boxing techniques from 1980. His philosophy is to create a stronger connection between Taekwondo and boxing, two sports that are difficult to learn on their own. The focus is on learning efficient techniques with foot and hand, reducing them to the essentials and perfecting them. Taekwondo forms the basis of Gruler's training. Boxing serves as an extension of these skills.

During his active time as a trainer and fighter, Gruler took over the office of state trainer Hessen for the WACO and was national trainer of the Budo Sports Association.

In 1998 Gruler gave up his club and all offices to devote himself to his children and family.

In 2000 Gruler founded the taekwondo boxing department in Niederhöchstadt / Eschborn together with boxing trainer Hans Hornung. The TuRa-Niederhöchstadt association has created the opportunity to set up a corresponding department.

With his two sons, Louis (7) and Leon (2), Gruler (5th DAN) built up the department step by step. Due to his children, he taught children from the age of seven for the first time.

In 2002, Gruler and Hornung decided to separate boxing and taekwondo into separate departments. In 2004 Gruler switched from the ITF Taekwondo Association to WTF Taekwondo.

In 2014 he founded two martial arts groups within his department: Taekwondo and Kickboxing, which are led by his student Adam Niazi and his sons.

The Taekwondo / Kickboxing department now has around 200 members and around 60 young people participate in training for each training day.

As a grandmaster, he still teaches his young and old students as well as the children of his former students.

In the form of Taekwondo that he teaches, exercise is not just a physical but also a mental discipline. After 45 years of martial arts experience, Gruler recognizes various deficits and the associated origins from a person's movement, be it emotionally or physically.

Belt exams are held in his club by other grandmasters. Thus, an international standard for performance is to be achieved and maintained. Gruler tends to use unconventional and unusual training methods. Among other things, there is always joint training between his Taekwondo club and other martial arts clubs ( Muay Thai etc.) or football teams .

His students are also successful fighters who, under his leadership, have become German champions, Hessen champions, vice and world champions in Taekwondo and kickboxing.

Gruler's eldest son, Louis Markus (3rd Dan Taekwondo, 1st Dan Kickboxing), is multiple German champion in heavyweight light contact in kickboxing and won gold in the team fight category at the 2010 World Kickboxing Association in Scotland -Medal for Germany, as well as 2016 world champion in kickboxing (WKU Association).

Gruler has now trained 20 black belts (1st – 3rd DAN), which are at his side during training.

Since December 2016, Gruler's Dojang has officially presented the worldwide headquarters of Songmookwan Taekwondo due to its training methods and successes. It is one of the highest qualifications for a Taekwondoin and his club.
