Hans Mooij

Johan Elisa "Hans" Mooij (* 1941 ) is a Dutch solid-state and low-temperature physicist and lecturer at the TU Delft .

Mooij received his doctorate in 1970 at the TU Delft with a dissertation on spectroscopy in the far infrared of anharmonic lattice vibrations ( Lattice resonance of alkali halides; far infrared measurements at high temperatures ). After that he was an engineer at Shell for a short time, but then returned to the TU Delft. From 1980 he was professor there and the first director of the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience there. In 1996/97 he was dean of the faculty for applied physics. In 2006 he retired. He also researches at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (where he works with Gerd Schön ).

He dealt with Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in thin superconducting films, increasing the critical current density through microwave excitation, micro-bridges, transport of single electrons and Cooper pairs and phase transitions and quantized eddies in arrays of Josephson junctions.

From the 1990s onwards he dealt with quantum information processing in which the qubits are quantized magnetic fluxes in superconductors.

He was Loeb Lecturer and received the Fritz London Memorial Prize in 2011 for his experimental contributions to the understanding of non-equilibrium phenomena in superconductors, the properties of superconducting films and arrays of Josephson junctions, Josephson flux as qubits and quantum transport of electrons in such systems .

Mooij has been a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences since 1993 and an honorary member of the Dutch Engineering Academy. He is an honorary doctor in Trondheim. He was sabbatical at Stanford, MIT, and NTT Basic Research Laboratories in Japan. Mooij is a Fellow of the American Physical Society . He received the Agilent Technologies Europhysics Prize (2004), the Shell Oeuvre Prize and the Physica Prize.
