Harald Popp (electrical engineer)

Harald Popp (* the 30th September 1956 in Erlangen ) is a German engineer of electrical engineering . He was involved in the development of the MP3 format and the audio compression process and is one of his fathers alongside Bernhard Grill and Karlheinz Brandenburg .

biography

After graduating from high school in 1975, he studied at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (1981 graduation as a graduate engineer in electrical engineering). From 1982 to 1984 he worked on a technology transfer project for cable fault location at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg. Since 1985 he has worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) in Erlangen. Since 1987 he has been responsible for DSP- based real-time audio coding systems. Until 2018 he was head of the "Multimedia Real-Time Systems" department, his research focus was the development of effective real-time implementations of audio and video coding processes.

In his free time, Harald Popp and his wife Isolde write the fantasy role-playing game Midgard . They have two sons together.
