history

A tower house was previously located at the strategically favorable location . After the lands were initially owned by Lords Home , Robert Scott bought the property in 1501. Around 1590 the fortified tower was demolished and the mansion was built in the early 17th century. This initially had a base area of around 23 m in length and around 5.5 m in width. In 1680, Walter Scott, Earl of Tarras, had the building extended by around eight meters on the east side and the interior redesigned over the course of the decade. After the Scotts left Harden in the late 18th century, it was used for agriculture. In the middle of the 19th century the mansion was restored and later served as the seat of Lords Polwarth .
