The Hare Krishna Temple on Bergstrasse in Zurich

The Hare Krishna Temple in Zurich is a Hindu temple founded by ISKCON (Hare Krishna) , which is also a temple for the Tamils living in Switzerland . The temple is on the slope of the Zürichberg . The temple, which is surrounded by a garden and whose beauty is often emphasized, is known beyond the country's borders.

history

The patrician villa at Bergstrasse 54, which is under homeland security, was acquired by ISKCON in the spring of 1980. The building, erected in 1909, was inhabited by the Bär banking family. After the house could not be bought and therefore remained uninhabited for years, the run-down villa could be bought cheaply by the Swiss Krishna community. Thanks to the work of supporters of the Krishna community, the villa could be repaired inexpensively.

On the ground floor there is a large prayer room with the altar, where Krishna is venerated. There are also smaller common rooms for various activities. On the first floor there is a library and an exhibition about the ISKCON founder Prabhupada . The rooms above are inhabited by monks and are not open to the public. When the weather is good, the feasts are taken in the garden. A small boutique in the entrance area sells books, incense and other utensils.

In the Hare Krishna Temple there is a traditional Sunday festival every week, which can be attended by everyone. The festival begins at 3 p.m. with a group singing the mahamantra , followed by a lecture from 4 p.m. and a vegetarian feast from 5 p.m. The evening bhajan starts at 7 p.m. during which the altar is newly decorated. The bhajan is led partly by supporters of ISKCON and partly by Tamils.
