The Hare Bay Islands Ecological Reserve is a nature reserve off the island of Newfoundland , which is part of the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador . The reserve was established in 1964. In 1983 the protected area received its current status.
location
The 31 km² large reserve is located in Hare Bay not far from the northern tip of the Great Northern Peninsula . It includes the Brent Islands ( ⊙ ), two almost connected islands, as well as the two islands Gilliat Island ( ⊙ ) and Spring Island ( ⊙ ). In addition, there are 26 km² of water around these islands. Main Brook parish is located south of the islands in Newfoundland.

fauna
The Hare Bay Islands Ecological Reserve was established to protect the eider breeding grounds on Gilliat Island and Spring Island . In 2004 there were around 170 breeding pairs on the islands. A duck breeding program took place in the area between 1988 and 1996. Other species of birds that breed in the reserve during the summer months include common tern , arctic tern , scarab , ring-billed gull , American herring gull and black-headed gull .
Fossils
There are rock formations from the Lower and Middle Ordovician in the nature reserve . These include u. a. 457 million year old snail fossils.
