The Harinxmastate in Beetsterzwaag

The Harinxmastate is a stately villa in the Dutch village of Beetsterzwaag (municipality of Opsterland ) in the province of Friesland . As a Rijksmonument , it is a listed building .

history

The neoclassical building was built in 1843 by Maurits Pico Diederik Baron van Harinxma thoe Slooten (1804–1876). He was Grietman (comparable to a mayor) of Smallingerland and moved his residence from Drachten to Beetsterzwaag for the new building . From 1847 to 1864 Harinxma thoe Slooten was deputy justice of the peace ( cantonal right ) at the district court in Beetsterzwaag. In 1877 the villa was enlarged according to plans by the Leeuward architect Herman Willem Stoett. In 1927 the architect Willem Gerretsen rebuilt the front to achieve a more elegant effect.

The associated park in the style of an English landscape garden was laid out in 1845 by the Dutch landscape architect Lucas Pieters Roodbaard .

During the Second World War , the Sisters of the Order of the Little Inspector van de Heilige Jozef were quartered in the villa. They were evacuated from Egmond aan Zee in 1942 and used the building as a nursing home until 1944.

The Harinxmastate is still owned by a descendant of the first owner.
