The Harlem River Bridge was a two-story railroad and pedestrian swing bridge over the Harlem River in New York City . It was located about halfway between Third Avenue Bridge and Willis Avenue Bridge and was in operation until 1955.
On the bridge, the New York elevated IRT Third Avenue Line crossed the Harlem River. This converged at 129th Street station on the south bank of the river with the IRT Second Avenue Line , led over the bridge and on to 149th Street station , where the IRT White Plains Road Line branched off from it. Due to the increased traffic on this section, the bridge had two levels. Loafer trains (locals) that stopped at each station, used the lower level, while express trains which are not held at each station, inverted on the upper level.
On the north side there was a branch to the 133rd Street Yard depot and a track connection to the New York, Westchester and Boston Railway on the lower level when viewed from the south . There were also walkways for pedestrians on both sides of the lower level, which were directly accessible from the banks via stairs.
The bridge lost its primary function in 1955 when the IRT Third Avenue Line was withdrawn from the south to 149th Street station . The bridge was finally blown up on May 22, 1956. Today (2008) there are no more remains.
