Harms am Wall

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harms am Wall was a textile department store in the Hanseatic city of Bremen , Am Wall 158–161. The building was built in 1909 by the architects Richard Jansen and Victor Meeussen and completely destroyed by arson in May 2015 .

Origin, architecture and development

The Bremen merchant Frerich Hinrich Harms founded the FH Harms textile business in Bremen in 1865 , which was later continued by his son Louis Adolf Wilhelm Harms (1872–1941). The new office building on Wall was built in 1911 in typical reform architecture . The clear facades of American commercial buildings at the time had a decisive influence on the designs of the two architects, as the window structure and the ornamentation of the sandstone facade clearly show. The Harms-Passage led through the house via a staircase to the Schüsselkorb shopping street and to the Domshof . Harms am Wall was initially a typical laundry and dowry shop. From 1915 to 1928 the building also housed the office of the two architects who carried out the work.

In 2001, the current owner of the business, Hans Eulenbruch, took over all the shares in the Harms family. The three buildings Am Wall, which the department store now comprised, were only sold by the Asendorf Family Foundation to the Müller & Bremermann company in 2009 .

About two months after the fire, the department store was reopened in another building on Am Wall.
