Harpalyke (daughter of Clymenus)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Harpalyke ( Greek  Ἁρπαλύκη , the predatory wolf ), daughter of the epicast , is a figure in Greek mythology .

Her father, the Argives Clymenus (or Periclymenus), son of Teleus , kindled in love for his daughter, who was called in the country the most beautiful and perverse secret with her. When she was given as a bride to the Neleiden Alastor , Klymenos first organized a splendid wedding feast. But shortly afterwards, jealousy overcame him; he pursued the bride and groom on their way home, brought back Harpalyke by force, and now socialized with his daughter in full view. In revenge, Harpalyke then killed her little brother Presbon and presented him to his father as a prepared meat dish at a festival. Then she prayed to the gods to be caught up. She was heard and transformed into the night bird Chalkis. Klymenus killed himself.

In another version, Clymenus is the son of Schoineus and King of Arcadia , and the child Harpalyke puts in front of the father is her own - conceived by Clymenus with her. When the father realizes the sacrilege, he kills Harpalyke.
