Harriet Bloch
Harriet Bloch (born July 26, 1881 in Kolding as Harriet Fussing, † April 1, 1975 ) was a Danish screenwriter of the silent film era . She is considered the first woman in Denmark to practice this profession professionally and one of the most successful Danish screenwriters of all time.
life and work
Harriet Fussing was born in Kolding in southern Denmark in 1881 as the daughter of an architect. At the age of 20 she moved to Copenhagen , where she married a wealthy engineer in 1902. The couple had six children.
Bloch was an avid cinema-goer and often attended up to three performances a day. According to her own statements, she made the decision to try herself as a screenwriter after seeing the abysses of Urban Gad and thought she could do it herself just as well. Without formal training, she wrote her first screenplay, which she sold to Nordisk Film and which resulted in the 1911 film Hendes Ære , directed by August Blom .
In the following years Bloch wrote around 150 screenplays for feature and short films, of which almost 100 were made into films. Bloch sold a large part of her manuscripts to Nordisk Film, where she is said to have been the favorite author of founder and producer Ole Olsen . The actor Valdemar Psilander also held her in high regard and had her write most of the manuscripts for his last films. Bloch also had some successes in other European countries: The Swedish Svenska Biografteatern ordered six manuscripts in 1916, of which the first Kärlek och journalistik was filmed by Mauritz Stiller . FW Murnau's The Walk into the Night is also based on a model from Bloch.
With the end of silent films, Harriet Bloch's career also ended in the mid-1920s. She wrote a few radio plays for the radio, but they were not published. Bloch withdrew from the film industry and bought two apple orchards in Ramløse , North Zealand , which she ran with her sons until her death.
