Harry Abend (born May 5, 1937 in Jarosław , Poland ) is a Venezuelan architect and sculptor .

life and work

Born in Poland to Jewish parents, Harry Abend emigrated with his family to Venezuela in 1948, where he attended the Colegio Moral y Luces and the Liceo Andrés Bello in Caracas . He then studied architecture at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV). However, he began his career as a sculptor in 1958. His greatest role model was the Venezuelan sculptor Miguel Arroyo (* 1920 in Caracas).

Harry Abend works mainly with the materials wood, stone and bronze. He uses many elements of architecture in his sculptures, such as gates, walls and gables. He also designs jewelry .

With his sculpture Forma 1961 he won the art prize Premio Nacional de Escultura at the Salón Oficial de Arte Venezolano in 1963 . Together with the kinetic artist Jesús Rafael Soto , he received the important commission for a relief at the top of the pyramid-shaped concert hall Teatro Teresa Carreño at Parque los Caobos in Caracas. He also created a sculpture for the synagogue of the Unión Israelita de Caracas. In 1964, Abend was one of the assistants of the British sculptor Kenneth Armitage at the Instituto de Diseño Neumann and the INCE . In 1990 he was awarded the Francisco de Miranda Order, 1st class.

Evening exhibited in many museums and galleries in North America, South America and Europe. His sculpture Homenaje a Miguel Arroyo (1974) is shown in the sculpture park of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Caracas .
