Harthill Castle

Harthill Castle , also Torries Castle , is a tower house near the Scottish village of Oyne in the Council Area Aberdeenshire . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. A former additional classification as a Scheduled Monument has now been lifted.

description

In 1523, the Harthill fiefdom belonged to the Leiths. Harthill Castle was built during the 17th century. Based on a stone described in the past that was lost in the course of a restoration between 1975 and 1978 and bearing the year 1601, this year can be assumed to be the year of construction. However, 1638 can also be considered as the year of construction.

The Tower House is isolated on a slight slope around 1.5 kilometers southeast of Oyne. To the east, the small stream Torries Burn , which flows into the Urie 2.5 kilometers northeast, passes the defense tower. A short distance to the south rises the Bennachie ridge . If the Tower House with its Z-shaped floor plan was described as an unthinkable ruin in 1972, it has been inhabited again since its restoration.

A round tower emerges from the southwest interior corner of the four-story quarry stone building, while a tower with a square floor plan is located in the northeast interior corner. Corner tours protrude from the edges of the Tower House . There are various loopholes in the masonry . The ground floor is designed as a vault .

Harthill Castle was once surrounded by a moat , but its course is no longer recognizable today. Fragments of the historical defensive wall with the gatehouse have been preserved.
