Hartnick
Hartnick is a German family name of Slavic origin. Its main distribution is in Niederlausitz near Cottbus . According to the Polish name researcher Barbara Czopek-Kopciuch , the name was also previously detectable in Silesia ( Breslau ). The base hard comes from hardness, endurance or hartować - hardening . Alternatively, it could come from the first name Artym . With the suffix -nik (or in German : -nick ) the name means someone who is tough / tough .
According to Max Gottschald's book “Die deutschen Personalennamen”, however, the following interpretation is also possible: Hartnick was reinterpreted from the German first name Hartwig into Slavonic pronunciation.
