Harvest Caye is an island off the coast of Belize . The private island is owned by Norwegian Cruise Line . The resort on the reef island (Caye) has several animal enclosures, including a butterfly house with Morpho menelaus (Blue Morpho butterfly).
geography
The elongated island has roughly the shape of a sawn knife blade. It is heavily built up. An artificial channel runs north of the island to the mouth of Big Creek , where there is a harbor.
Controversy
On May 23, 2017, Harvest Caye personnel, accompanied by Belize Forestry Department officer Edgar Correa, removed a young Scarlet Macaw from the Belize Bird Rescue Station as a zoo animal for Harvest Caye. Belize Bird Rescue, a non-profit organization aiming to raise and reintroduce wild birds, protested violently against this practice because the bird was healthy and a good candidate for release. The confiscation was also condemned by the Belize Audubon Society and resulted in significant protests.
