Hasegawa Nyozekan

Hasegawa Nyozekan ( Japanese 長谷川 如是 閑 , actually Yamamoto Manjirō (山 本 萬 次郎); born November 30, 1875 in Tōkyō ; died November 11, 1969 ) was a Japanese journalist and social critic.

Live and act

Hasegawa Nyoezekan studied law at the Tōkyō Hōgakuin (東京 法学院), the forerunner of the Chūō University and graduated in 1898. He started working for Kuga Katsunan's newspaper "Nihon" in 1903. In 1907 he switched to the magazine "Nihon oyobi Nihonjin" (日本 及 日本人), which was published by Miyake Setsurei (1860-1945). Eventually he switched to the Osaka Asahi Shimbun newspaper and became a well-known advocate of liberal politics.

In 1918, in connection with the "akasaka Asahi Hikka incident" (大阪 朝日 筆 禍 事件) , he left the newspaper with Ōyama Ikuo , Torii Sosen and other members of the editorial team in protest when the newspaper was censored by the government under the press law. The following year he founded the magazine “Wir” (我 等, Warera) with Ōyama, which developed into an influential paper.

With his contributions, Hasegawa sought to develop a theoretical basis for a socially oriented democracy and to combat the growing fanaticism of the military leadership. He remained true to his principles even during the Pacific War . In 1948 he was awarded the Order of Culture , later in 1951 as a person with special cultural merits .

Hasegawa's writings have been summarized as "Hasegawa Nyozekan senshū". They appeared in 8 volumes from 1969 to 1970.

Remarks

  1. Since the imperial cultural order is not allowed to be associated with money allocations, in 1951 the distinction "person with special cultural merits" was introduced on a normal household basis; it is associated with an honorary salary. As a rule, this minor distinction is awarded first, then - not in every case - the cultural medal. Those who were awarded the Cultural Order before 1951 received the distinction of “person with special cultural merits” and the honorary salary retrospectively.
