Hassan Jire Qalinle

Hassan Jire Qalinle (also Jireh , Gire Qualinle or Kalinle written) is a politician in Somali region in Ethiopia . He was president of the region from July 1993 to April 1994 and was then head of the opposition Western Somali Democratic Party .

Life

Hassan Jire Qalinle belongs to the Somali - Clan of Ogadeni- Darod to, or more precisely their sub-clan of Aulihan. He had been a pilot with the Police Air Wing in Somalia .

After the fall of the first government of the newly formed Somali state (with regional president Abdullahi Mohammed Saadi of the Ogaden National Liberation Front ONLF), the regional parliament elected Hassan Jire Qalinle as a member of the Western Somali Liberation Front WSLF as the new president. However, the leadership of the ONLF convinced Hassan Jire to join the ONLF “for the sake of the Ogadeni cause”, which, as the most important organization of the Ogadeni clan, was largely striving for the region's independence from Ethiopia. In a nationwide radio interview, Hassan Jire stated that he was a member of the ONLF, although his newly elected secretary Eid Dahir Farah contradicted him on the same radio program.

In February 1994, the ONLF / Ogadeni-dominated regional parliament voted to exercise the right to self-determination, i.e. to strive for independence from Ethiopia, which the individual regions are allowed to do according to the Ethiopian constitution. Less than two months later, Hassan Jire and his vice-president were deposed and replaced by Abdurahman Ugas Mahmud , who in turn was released in December 1994.

Hassan Jire later returned to the WSLF. This now spoke out against a separation of the region from Ethiopia and in 1994 united with the Islamic-traditionalist party Tadamun (“Solidarity”) to form the Western Somali Democratic Party (WSDP). This merger happened with a view to the 1995 elections and was intended to unite the Ogadeni, as the various non-Ogadeni minority clans in the Ethiopian Somali Democratic League with the support of the central government were developing. Hassan Jire became party leader of the WSDP. The ONLF was also invited to join the new Ogadeni party, but negotiations were unsuccessful.
