Main Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
The main observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine ( Ukrainian Головна астрономічна обсерваторія НАН України , English. Main Astronomical Observatory of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine , Mao) is an observatory of Ukraine . It was founded in 1944 on the initiative of the astronomer and geophysicist Alexander Jakowlewitsch Orlow (1880–1951) and belongs to the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .
The observatory is located 12 km from the center of Kiev in the Holosiyiv forest area and houses a number of smaller instruments.
AZT-2 reflector telescope with 70 cm aperture
Is the largest instrument of the observatory a reflecting telescope of Carl Zeiss Jena with 2 meter diameter mirror, which is based on the astrophysical branch ( 43 ° 16 '30 " N , 42 ° 29' 57" O ) on the mountain Terskol in 3100 m above sea level near of the Elbrus summit in the Caucasus .
