history

The first post office building, the Alte Post , was built between 1783 and 1784 on the opposite side of the later Platz der Einheit in Friedrich-Ebert-Straße. With the reorganization of the Prussian postal system, the structure of a senior post office was introduced in 1850 . In 1894 the construction of a new post office under the direction of the building management Ernst Hake began in the Reich Post Office, the "Neue Post", which was inaugurated on March 10, 1900 by Kaiser Wilhelm II of Prussia personally. The building, built in the neo-baroque style, had side towers and a dome that crowned the main entrance. In 1936 the dome and towers were dismantled. The entire complex was badly damaged in the bombing on April 14, 1945. The building was restored in the early 1950s and has since been used again as the town's main post office.
