Main Post Office (Kempten)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Former post office in Kempten, today the headquarters of Sozialbau Kempten GmbH

The former main post office in the town of Kempten in the Allgäu is entered in the list of architectural monuments of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation . The old post office at Allgäuer Straße 1 is a typical building of the Bavarian State Post with neo-baroque elements. The two-wing building in Kempten has a lush facade structure and corner accentuation and bears the designation 1904 on one of the bay windows.

It was strategically located because Kempten Central Station was located there until 1969 . This was relocated two kilometers south in 1969. All buildings (train station hotel, train station pharmacy, cinema, restaurants) that had a clear connection to the train station lost their importance until the completion of the Forum Allgäu shopping center on March 10, 2003.

After the excavation of the 18-meter-deep construction pit for the August Fischer House on the side of the former post office, long cracks formed on the facade.
